Gwangju City has been selected for the Ministry of Education's "Regional Lifelong Education Activation Support Project" for the second consecutive year, following last year, and will receive national funding for two years in a row.
The "Regional Lifelong Education Activation Support Project" aims to reduce regional disparities by operating a consortium model among provincial lifelong education promotion agencies (metropolitan governments), lifelong learning cities (basic local governments), and related lifelong education institutions (local universities, companies, etc.), strengthening connections and cooperation in the field of lifelong education, and discovering specialized models.
To provide lifelong education in response to an aging population, the city formed a consortium with the Gwangju Talent Lifelong Education Promotion Agency, five lifelong learning cities in Dong, Seo, Nam, Buk, and Gwangsan districts, and related institutions such as Gwangju Health University and Chosun College of Science and Technology. They applied for the Ministry of Education's "Lifelong Education Activation Support Project" and were finally selected on the 1st. As a result, they secured 50 million KRW in national funding.
The newly selected project, "Naeil (My job, Tomorrow) Shines (Gwanggoeul) Si (Senior) Na (Sharing)," is a collaborative initiative among Gwangju City, the Gwangju Talent Lifelong Education Promotion Agency, local governments, and universities (Gwangju Health University and Chosun College of Science and Technology). This specialized program is designed to promote intergenerational exchange by supporting lifelong learning for the elderly, leading to social participation and economic activity.
Gwangju City plans to launch the "Naeil Shines Si Na" project starting in May. Five projects will be carried out in each district: ▲Company-linked one-stop job opportunities ▲Local university-linked lifelong careers ▲Hub-based health vitality ▲Life story creators ▲Digital skills for daily life. The Gwangju Talent Lifelong Education Promotion Agency plans to develop and operate gerontology content and designate hub campuses for seniors to implement related projects.
Kim Kisook, Director of Education and Youth, said, "Forming a consortium among Gwangju City, the Gwangju Talent Lifelong Education Promotion Agency, local governments, and universities to create specialized programs highlighting the characteristics of each district has led to this positive outcome. We will continue to actively promote various projects through inter-agency cooperation."
Meanwhile, Gwangju City is the only metropolitan government in the country where all five districts are designated as both "Lifelong Learning Cities" and "Lifelong Learning Cities for the Disabled."
