Seongnam City has prepared programs to instill environmental awareness across all age groups and supports the education by accepting applications according to the target group.
Toddlers (ages 6-7) and 1st and 2nd grade elementary students can participate in insect observation programs, such as dragonfly watching, at the Yangji-dong Environmental Education Center in Sujeong-gu.
3rd grade elementary students will attend woodworking experience classes, 4th graders will explore school gardens, visit incineration plants and receive resource circulation education related to Seongnam and Pangyo environmental energy facilities, 5th graders will experience forests and streams in parks or Tancheon Stream, and 6th graders will participate in climate change education programs at their respective schools.
Middle school students in grades 1, 2, and 3 will engage in programs such as carbon neutrality and shampoo bar making in their classrooms.
For students with disabilities attending Seongeun and Hye-eun Schools or special classes in general elementary schools, the city operates the “We All Green Together, Visiting Ecology Classroom.” Environmental instructors conduct woodworking programs and ecological experiences in classrooms, gardens, and other locations at each school.
The city also runs a “Visiting Citizen Environmental Classroom.” Groups of 10 to 16 people, such as welfare centers, senior centers, parent associations, and apartment residents’ representative meetings, receive education on carbon neutrality and climate change.
Family-oriented experiential events called “Environmental Weekend Exploration Class” are also offered. Seasonal ecological learning can be done at Namhansanseong Park and Pangyo Ecological Park.
Applications for elementary and middle school environmental education can be made by teachers through the Seongnam Youth and Young Adults Foundation platform “One Click” and others.
Toddlers and general citizens can apply through Seongnam City’s lifelong learning integrated platform “Baeumsoop” and the Eco Seongnam website.
A Seongnam City official said, “We will raise everyone’s interest in the environment and actively respond to various environmental issues such as climate change and biodiversity conservation together with our citizens.”
