The Criminal Investigation Unit of the North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency announced on the 2nd that they had arrested four extortionists who threatened drunk drivers or lured acquaintances into sexual relations and then demanded money under the pretense of reporting sexual assault, with one of them being taken into custody.
According to the investigation, these individuals, who were neighborhood acquaintances, followed a drunk driving vehicle in June, intentionally caused an accident, and threatened to report the drunk driving, extorting 7 million won. They attempted to demand 15 million won from another victim using the same method but failed.
In August, they conspired with two women from a room salon to invite an acquaintance to a drinking party and induced sexual relations. Afterwards, they threatened to report sexual assault and managed to extort a total of 40 million won.
The police launched an investigation after receiving a tip related to the case. They analyzed CCTV footage and vehicle black box recordings from the scene and confirmed circumstances in which the suspects divided the extorted money, ultimately leading to their arrest.
A police official stated, "To prevent crimes that target the weaknesses of drunk drivers, it is most important not to drive under the influence," and added, "We will continue to crack down on malicious extortion offenders."
