Gwangju Dong-gu Public Officials Implement Car-Free Commuting System

Gwangju Dong-gu (District Chief Lim Taek) announced on the 2nd that in order to reduce fine dust, alleviate traffic congestion, and promote the use of public transportation, the first Friday of every month will be designated and operated as a "Car-Free Commute Day."

The "Car-Free Commute Day" is designed to encourage public officials to take the lead in spreading an eco-friendly public transportation culture and to induce voluntary participation from residents. On the upcoming 4th, employees will refrain from using private cars and will commute using eco-friendly means such as public transportation, bicycles, or walking.

To prepare for this, a survey was conducted among all employees, and it was found that 85% of them responded that they would voluntarily participate in the "Car-Free Commute Day." However, vehicles for people with disabilities or pregnant women, vehicles carrying infants or the elderly, and vehicles for emergency business trips are excluded.

The implementation of the "Car-Free Commute Day" is expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality by decreasing the volume of car traffic in the city center. In particular, this initiative aligns with the "Geumnam-ro Car-Free Street" project that Dong-gu began last month, and it is hoped that this will serve as an opportunity for the district to transform into a "Daejabo" (public transportation, bicycle, pedestrian) city.

Lim Taek, the district chief, said, "I hope that the 'Car-Free Commute Day,' which public officials are practicing first, will serve as a catalyst for residents to adopt an eco-friendly transportation culture," adding, "We will continue to promote various eco-friendly policies to create a sustainable urban environment."
