Opposition-Led Report on Choe Sang-mok's Impeachment Motion to the National Assembly Plenary Session

The impeachment motion against Choi Sang-mok, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Strategy and Finance, proposed by the opposition parties including the Democratic Party of Korea, was reported to the National Assembly plenary session on the 2nd.

Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the National Assembly, said at the plenary session that afternoon, "The impeachment motion must be voted on between 24 hours and 72 hours after being reported to the plenary session," and added, "Each negotiation group representative should coordinate the agenda schedule so that the motion can be reviewed according to the National Assembly Act."

Earlier, on the 21st of last month, the five opposition parties proposed the impeachment motion against Deputy Prime Minister Choi, who was acting as the President. This was because Choi did not appoint Ma Eun-hyuk, a nominee for Constitutional Court Justice, despite the Constitutional Court's ruling that the failure to appoint Ma constituted an infringement of the National Assembly's authority.

Once the impeachment motion is submitted to the National Assembly, it is automatically reported at the first plenary session after the proposal.

According to the National Assembly Act, once the impeachment motion is reported to the plenary session, it must be voted on between 24 hours and 72 hours later, or it can be referred to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee for hearings and other investigative processes.

The opposition parties are expected to decide whether to hold a plenary vote on Deputy Prime Minister Choi's impeachment motion after observing the ruling on President Yoon Seok-youl's impeachment trial on the 4th.
