The government is initiating cooperation with European technological powerhouses such as Germany and Switzerland in advanced fields including industrial artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and robotics.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 2nd that it attended the 'EUREKA Global Innovation Summit' held in Hanover, Germany on the 1st and 2nd, where it discussed plans for advanced technology cooperation with Germany, Switzerland, and others.
EUREKA is the world's largest joint research and development platform, with participation from 48 countries centered around Europe. Korea was promoted to a full member as the first non-European country in 2022 and was appointed as a board member in 2023.
Je Gyeong-hee, Director of Industrial Technology Convergence Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, held a meeting with Armin Lainartz, Deputy Director-General for International Cooperation at Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the chair country of EUREKA, to discuss expanding Korea-Germany quantum cooperation in strategic fields such as robotics and semiconductors, as well as strengthening cooperation using the EUREKA platform. She also met with Marc Pochard, Head of International Cooperation at the Swiss Innovation Agency, the next EUREKA chair country, to support Switzerland’s successful chairmanship (July 2025?June 2026) and convey Korea’s strong willingness to cooperate.
Je also visited the Fraunhofer Society and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Germany to discuss ways to expand cooperation in next-generation technologies such as industrial AI, quantum computing, and robotics. The Fraunhofer Society, established in 1949, is Germany’s leading government-funded research organization specializing in applied technologies. DLR is a representative German technical institution researching aerospace, energy, robotics, and more.
During the EUREKA Summit, the government also held the '2025 Korea EUREKA Day,' the largest technology exchange event among EUREKA member countries. Since joining EUREKA in 2009, Korea has supported over 250 projects in advanced bio, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and other fields with a total funding of approximately 250 billion KRW, utilizing EUREKA as a core platform for technological cooperation with Europe.
Director Je stated, "We will continue to diversify and activate international technology cooperation, including through EUREKA, so that our companies can secure world-class advanced technologies and lead the global market."
