As the verdict on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Sukyeol approaches on the 4th, citizens in Gwangju's Dong-gu 5.18 Democracy Square will gather to watch the Constitutional Court's decision together.
According to Gwangju Emergency Action for Immediate Resignation of Yoon Sukyeol and Social Reform on the 2nd, the group will broadcast the Constitutional Court's verdict live on a screen at 5.18 Democracy Square starting at 11 a.m. on the day of the ruling. They explained, "We have prepared the space and equipment so that Gwangju citizens can share this historic moment together."
If the impeachment is upheld, Gwangju Emergency Action plans to hold a 'victory celebration event' on site with citizens. If it is not upheld, they intend to continue the 'Citizen Rally' that has been held every Saturday.
The organization has been staging a 24-hour overnight protest in front of the Constitutional Court since the 1st, demanding the removal of President Yoon. At a previous press conference, they emphasized, "The Constitutional Court must rule for the removal of Yoon Sukyeol as the people wish," and added, "That is the only way not to commit a crime before the people and history." They further demanded, "The National Assembly must immediately impeach Han Ducksoo and Choi Sangmok, who obstructed the suppression of the rebellion, and the Ministry of Justice must file for the dissolution of the People Power Party."
With a large crowd expected to gather at 5.18 Democracy Square on the day of the verdict, the police plan to deploy personnel on site to maintain order.
