Visit to Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology with YWCA and YMCA
Empathy for Innovation in New Marine Industries, Cooperation for New Regional Economic Growth
Busan Institute of Science and Technology Promotion (BISTEP, President Kim Youngbu) held the 2nd “On-site Regional R&D Empathy Tour with Civic Groups” for 2025 at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), which is under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, on the 1st.
The event was organized to build consensus among local community members on the necessity of marine science and technology R&D and its ripple effect on the regional economy as a whole.
BISTEP has been promoting a program since this year in which it visits and experiences various regional R&D sites that contribute to the development of the regional economy, such as local key industries and future new growth industries, together with civic groups.
The event was attended by Sung Changyong, Chairman of the Planning and Finance Committee of the Busan Metropolitan Council, Lee Heeseung, President of KIOST and researchers, Kim Youngbu, President of BISTEP and staff, as well as members of civic groups such as YWCA, YMCA, and the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice.
The event began with an introduction to the current status of KIOST’s research projects by Jang Deokhee, Director of the Future Strategy Research Center at KIOST, followed by a Q&A session and discussion on advanced marine industries and policies among the participants. In addition, through tours of key research facilities such as the Hydraulic Experiment Building and the Marine Satellite Center, participants were able to experience first-hand the sites of national and regional innovation in advanced marine industries.
Sung Changyong, Chairman of the Planning and Finance Committee of the Busan Metropolitan Council, said, “It was very meaningful to tour KIOST, where the nation’s marine science and technology research capabilities are concentrated, together with local community members and to gain a vivid insight into the sites of regional marine industry innovation. We will continue to support advanced marine industries so that Busan can develop as a leading city in future marine industries.”
Lee Heeseung, President of KIOST, said, “KIOST is constantly researching and innovating to lead the level of marine science and technology in Korea. In order to keep pace with recent trends in science and industrial technology, we are expanding our research areas by introducing new technologies such as AI, big data, and IoT into marine science and technology, and we will continue our efforts to create new marine value and enhance the competitiveness of national and Busan’s advanced marine industries.”
Kim Youngbu, President of BISTEP, said, “Through this empathy tour, we were able to experience the current status of regional marine science and technology R&D together and raise public understanding of the importance of research institutes contributing to the development of the regional marine industry. We will further strengthen the cooperative network between BISTEP and KIOST, enhance planning and attraction support for large-scale national R&D projects, and conduct effective regional science and technology policy research.”
Busan City has been implementing the “Support Project for Discovering and Fostering Leading Fields of New Marine Industries” since this year, which discovers, plans, and provides demonstration support for new R&D projects to secure future growth engines in the marine and fisheries sector, with BISTEP serving as the dedicated agency.
The Busan Institute of Science and Technology Advancement is hosting the 2nd "Local R&D Field Empathy Tour with Civic Groups" in 2025 at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology.
