Nighttime Viewing Suspended, Hamyangmun Gate Closed
Decision Made to Prevent Safety Accidents Among Visitors
On the 4th, the day of the impeachment trial verdict for President Yoon Suk-yeol, major palaces and cultural facilities have decided to close, and admission to Changgyeonggung Palace will also be restricted. The Cultural Heritage Administration's Palace and Royal Tombs Headquarters announced on the 2nd, "Nighttime viewing of Changgyeonggung will be suspended, and Hamyangmun Gate connecting Changgyeonggung and Changdeokgung will be closed." This decision is interpreted as a measure to prevent safety accidents among visitors due to the expected large-scale gatherings. According to regulations regarding palace and royal tomb visits, if circumstances arise that may affect the health and safety of visitors, public access to palaces and royal tombs can be suspended for a certain period.
Previously, the Palace and Royal Tombs Headquarters decided not to temporarily open Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, and Deoksugung Palaces. They plan to decide whether to extend the closure period based on the situation before and after the verdict. Cultural events planned at the palaces, such as Korea's traditional jang-making culture event, the changing of the guard ceremony at Gyeongbokgung, nighttime viewing of Huijeongdang Hall at Changdeokgung, and viewing of Seokjojeon Hall at Deoksugung, have also been canceled or postponed. The Constitutional Court and major museums and art galleries around Gwanghwamun will also take a brief pause. Facilities including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Seoul, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, the National Folk Museum, the National Palace Museum, and Cheongwadae will be closed.
