The Israeli Prime Minister's Office stated in a morning press release, "Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his gratitude to Eli Sharvit, the nominee for Shin Bet chief, for accepting the nomination, but after further review, he informed that he plans to interview other candidates."

Despite the unresolved lawsuit challenging the dismissal of the former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, the successor nomination was announced the previous morning and then reversed about 24 hours later.

The newspaper reported that Netanyahu faced pressure from right-wing colleagues to withdraw Sharvit's nomination after it was revealed that Sharvit participated in protests opposing the 2023 government's judiciary weakening legislation.

Sharvit had also publicly supported the 2022 Lebanon maritime border agreement, which Netanyahu opposed when he was the opposition leader, and earlier this year, he wrote an article criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump's climate policies.

Separately, warnings have emerged from the legal community and opposition parties that if the court overturns Bar's dismissal, a constitutional crisis could arise due to a clash between the judiciary and the executive branch.

Bar fell out of favor with Prime Minister Netanyahu after criticizing the actions of far-right ministers who provoked Palestinian residents during the Gaza Strip war phase. Notably, Shin Bet pointed out in a report released earlier last month that Netanyahu's cabinet was fundamentally responsible for allowing Hamas's surprise attack.
