Busan City Thoroughly Prepares for Second Half Council Meeting
Focus on Key Maritime and Fisheries Issues and Future Growth Engines

What are the current issues and future growth engines in the maritime and fisheries sector?

On the afternoon of the 1st at 2 p.m., Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Hyungjoon) announced that it held an administrative council meeting with the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries and Busan Port Authority (BPA) in the main conference room of the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries to meticulously review key issues.

The meeting was attended by Kim Gwanghoe, Deputy Mayor for Future Innovation of Busan, Kim Hyejeong, Director of the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, and Song Sanggeun, President of BPA. The participants engaged in in-depth discussions on various long-standing issues in the maritime and fisheries sector.

This council meeting, resumed after eight years, served as an opportunity to focus on the pending issues of each institution. The institutions conducted in-depth discussions, from the selection and review of submitted agenda items to future management methods.

The council reviewed the necessity of discussing 14 agenda items submitted by each institution, the progress of their implementation, and any problems encountered. They proposed areas for inter-agency cooperation and pledged active collaboration along with solutions suggested by each institution.

The main agenda items included: ▲Improvement of the tenant system for the Southern 'Container' Port Hinterland Complex at Busan New Port ▲Creation of an eco-friendly integrated energy terminal at Busan New Port ▲Establishment of a coffee industry complex utilizing port facilities ▲Hosting a Busan Port Festival in conjunction with a large-scale Hallyu event in 2025 ▲Development of Busan North Port as an innovation growth hub by attracting foreign capital (5 items from the city); ▲Cooperation on changes to the urban management plan for Phase 1 of the Busan North Port redevelopment project and other issues from the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries (5 items); ▲Establishment and operation of a North Port cargo truck parking lot and other BPA agenda items (4 items).

Based on the results of the discussions at this council meeting, Busan City plans to re-examine each agenda item and continue to manage them through working-level meetings so that more concrete discussions can take place at the city’s meeting in the second half of the year.

Additionally, for the second half of the year, the city plans to select agenda items as future growth engines for Busan as a maritime capital after internal review meetings.

Kim Gwanghoe, Deputy Mayor for Future Innovation of Busan, stated, “Currently, Busan Port is the world’s second-largest transshipment port and the seventh-largest in terms of cargo volume. With 47 berths to be established by 2030, we expect Busan’s status as a global logistics hub city to be further strengthened.”

Deputy Mayor Kim emphasized, “With the reopening of the council among the three institutions, we will do our utmost to operate the council so that new ideas can emerge for addressing Busan’s maritime and fisheries issues, such as attracting investment to Busan North Port, from a fresh perspective, securing the future of Busan as a global hub city.”
