Jogye Order Undergoes First Major Reorganization in 30 Years Since 1994
Transition from Three-Office System to Unified General Affairs Office
Establishment of Jogye Order Research Institute and Media Public Relations Office
The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism announced on the 1st that it has newly reorganized its central administrative body into a single General Affairs Office system for the first time in 30 years.
On the morning of the 1st, the first day of the integrated operation of the three centers of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, a memorial service was held at the Daeungjeon Hall of Jogyesa Temple. Provided by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism
The integration and reorganization from the previous three-office system is the first since the 1994 sect reform, marking 30 years. With the establishment of the unified General Affairs Office system, the propagation, monastic promotion, monastic education, and welfare tasks previously handled by separate offices will now be directly managed by the General Affairs Office. The Jogye Order stated, “We plan to maintain consistent and continuous operations in the fields of propagation and monk education,” and added, “We will devote ourselves to creating a dynamic Buddhism that quickly responds to social changes.”
Through this reorganization, the Jogye Order Research Institute and the Media Public Relations Office have been newly established as organizations directly under the Chief Abbot. The Jogye Order Research Institute integrates the existing sect research organizations and focuses on preparing Buddhist solutions to social issues. It will devote efforts to establishing business plans through the publication of reports by policy and field, and to preparing mid- to long-term plans for the development of propagation and monastic education.
The newly established Media Public Relations Office will focus on operating new media to enhance the sect’s public image. It will also support the production of Buddhist content.
A Jogye Order official stated, “We will strive to enhance the effectiveness of the organizational reorganization by strengthening administrative staff training and simplifying administration, and to ensure that the new system is stably established.”
