Position on the Constitutional Court's Impeachment Trial Verdict Date Confirmed
"The Most Important Thing Is to Stabilize State Affairs"
To the Democratic Party: "Delay in Processing... Cooperate on the Supplementary Budget"
On June 1, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon stated, "The most important thing is to stabilize the government without confusion regardless of the outcome," as the date for the impeachment trial verdict of President Yoon Seok-yeol was set.
Mayor Oh said on Facebook that day, "Until the Constitutional Court delivers its verdict, what the political circles must do is to create a social atmosphere where everyone can accept the result," emphasizing this point.
Earlier, Mayor Oh had mentioned that the impeachment trial of President Yoon was flawed from the detention stage. He warned, "Even in ordinary criminal trials, the defendant's right to defense must be thoroughly guaranteed, and this is even more so in a nationally significant case like a presidential impeachment trial. However, in this trial, the defense was severely restricted due to wrongful detention, and the proceedings continued under these conditions, which will remain a serious issue in constitutional history."
He also claimed that there were procedural flaws throughout the trial process. He said, "The National Assembly removed the charge of rebellion from the impeachment accusation, causing a loss of identity in the charges, and there was no official supplementary resolution from the National Assembly regarding this. This is a serious defect that fundamentally undermines the legitimacy of the trial."
On the same day, Mayor Oh also stressed the necessity of a supplementary budget. He said, "The economy is forecasted to slow down amid political instability and external trade pressures, and the wildfire damage is at a national disaster level. There is no room for the government and political circles to hesitate in the face of public livelihood and disasters." He added, "Seoul City has completed preparations for the supplementary budget focusing on stabilizing public livelihood and investing in advanced technology (AI), and the Seoul Metropolitan Council, with cooperation from both ruling and opposition parties, has decided to hold a 'one-point extraordinary session' to support wildfire damage. If the central government and the National Assembly pass the supplementary budget bill, Seoul City can respond swiftly."
Regarding the Democratic Party of Korea, he said, "The Democratic Party is delaying the processing of the supplementary budget for various reasons," and added, "Although they do not explicitly say it, in reality, it is a demand to include the 13 trillion won for the '250,000 won support for all citizens' proposed by Representative Lee Jae-myung in the supplementary budget." He then urged, "They came out carrying water buckets to put out the urgent fire, but it seems like they are wetting their election posters first. The Democratic Party should cooperate with the supplementary budget processing before it is too late."
