Damyang County in Jeollanam-do announced on the 1st that it has designated the period until the 15th as a "Special Countermeasure Period for Large-scale Wildfires," putting all efforts into preventing spring wildfires.
Following the issuance of the "Severe" level of the national wildfire disaster crisis alert on the 22nd of last month, the county reviewed its step-by-step response command system for wildfire outbreaks, discussed interdepartmental cooperation, strengthened crackdowns on illegal burning, and considered measures to monitor accidental fires caused by visitors to the mountains.
To strengthen the wildfire prevention monitoring system, all public officials have been assigned specific areas to patrol, cracking down on the burning of agricultural by-products, rice paddies and field ridges, and household waste in areas adjacent to forests. In particular, the county is making every effort to prevent wildfires by directly distributing promotional materials at major tourist sites, village halls, and senior centers.
To prevent wildfires, the county has deployed 54 professional wildfire prevention and suppression personnel throughout the region to operate a constant monitoring system, with public officials also continuing emergency duty. In addition, during the first week of April, a wildfire prevention campaign will be held with Damyang Fire Station at Chuwolsan and Byeongpungsan, and a joint fire drill will be conducted at Juknokwon, a major tourist attraction.
Jung Gwangseon, acting governor of the county, stated, "Wildfires can cause enormous property and human losses in a moment of carelessness, so active cooperation from residents, close collaboration among related agencies, and proactive prevention activities by public officials are crucial," adding, "We will do our utmost to thoroughly prevent wildfires from occurring."
