Yeongdeungpo-gu Conducts On-site Inspection of Illegal Buildings Based on Aerial Photographs

On-site inspections of 5,348 buildings for illegal extensions and renovations by June
Targeting buildings suspected of violations based on aerial photo analysis

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will conduct on-site inspections of 5,348 buildings identified through aerial photo analysis by June to prevent safety accidents and casualties caused by illegal buildings.

Comparing past and current buildings through aerial photos is effective in identifying illegal rooftop and outdoor structures that are difficult to detect on-site.

The inspection targets are 5,348 buildings where changes were detected or buildings that were extended or remodeled without permission or notification, based on the aerial photo analysis results.

The main types of violations include ▲ veranda expansions ▲ rooftop room installations ▲ construction of temporary buildings such as containers ▲ business area extensions using vinyl sheets or tarps.

Previously, the district installed banners and delivered inspection notices to building owners to inform them in advance about the on-site inspections based on aerial photo analysis, and will continue inspections until June. The actual area and structure of the buildings will be investigated to check if they match the building register, and corrective actions will be taken according to relevant laws and regulations.

Since the purpose of the on-site inspections is to prevent safety accidents, the district will first guide owners to voluntarily remove violations or obtain retroactive permits if violations are found. If corrective actions are not taken, administrative measures such as marking the illegal buildings on the building register and imposing fines will be enforced to ensure illegal buildings are not left unattended.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Illegal buildings pose high risks of fire and safety accidents, so continuous maintenance is necessary,” and added, “We will do our best to create a safe and pleasant urban environment through thorough inspections.”
