Yangju City, Gyeonggi Province, announced on the 31st that on April 19, the documentary film "1980 Sabuk" will be screened at the "Yangju City Art Creation Studio," selected for the "DMZ Community Screening Support Project" hosted by the "DMZ Documentary Film Festival."
This screening is the second community screening event following last year's "1923 Kanto Massacre."
The "DMZ Community Screening" is a support project operated by the "DMZ Documentary Film Festival," a leading documentary international film festival in Asia, to promote the social value of documentary films and deliver historical facts to a wider audience.
The screened film, "1980 Sabuk," directed by Park Bong-nam in 2024, is a documentary about the labor uprising that occurred in Sabuk-eup, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province, in April 1980.
At that time, miners protested against low wages, poor working conditions, and unfair treatment by going on strike, and severe violence was inflicted during the government's harsh suppression of the strike.
The film thoroughly documents the details of this incident, exposes the reality of state violence, and includes testimonies aimed at revealing the truth.
Notably, this work was recognized for its artistic and historical value by winning the Korean Competition Feature Award and the International Federation of Film Critics Award (FIPRESCI) at the 16th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival.
After the screening, there will be a discussion session with director Park Bong-nam, where the audience can discuss the historical significance and contemporary implications of the film with the director.
The community screening is free of charge, and citizens who wish to participate can apply by phone or email to the "Yangju City Art Creation Studio" starting April 8.
If seats remain after the pre-registration deadline, on-site admission will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
A Yangju City official stated, "'Yangju City Art Creation Studio' operates various programs to support artists' creations and to make culture and arts easily accessible to citizens," adding, "We ask for much interest and participation in this community screening as well."
Meanwhile, the "Yangju City Art Creation Studio" will hold the "Check-in Exhibition" featuring five 10th-term resident artists?Kim Min-ji, Beom Jin-yong, Shin Yong-jae, Jeon Ga-bin, and Hong Soo-hyun?from April 15 to 25, and on April 28, a relay solo exhibition by 9th-term resident artist Choi Hyung-jun is scheduled.
