Mass Vaccination of 452,000 Cattle
in Jeonbuk Province Against Lumpy Skin Disease
Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province will conduct a mass vaccination of 452,000 cattle raised in the province against lumpy skin disease from the 1st to the 30th of next month.
According to the province on the 31st, this vaccination campaign will be carried out differently based on the size of the farm. Full-time farmers with more than 50 cattle must vaccinate their animals themselves by the 14th of next month, while small-scale farmers with fewer than 50 cattle will receive support from public veterinarians for vaccination until the 30th of next month.
In 2023, the province suffered damages from a total of 14 cases of lumpy skin disease in Gochang (12 cases), Buan (1 case), and Imsil (1 case), resulting in the culling of 1,050 cattle.

Fortunately, there have been no additional cases since 2024. However, considering that lumpy skin disease is transmitted by blood-sucking insects such as flies and mosquitoes, the province plans to complete vaccinations before April, when insect activity becomes more prevalent.
The province has educated city and county officials as well as public veterinarians on the correct method of administering the lumpy skin vaccine, which must be given subcutaneously, unlike the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine. Training will also be provided to each farm to ensure accurate vaccination and maximize the effectiveness of the campaign.
Meanwhile, since last year, Jeonbuk Province has been investing over 500 million won annually from its own budget to provide 'vaccine stress relief agents' to minimize damage to farms caused by vaccinations and to encourage active participation from livestock farmers.
Kim Jonghun, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of the province, said, "Lumpy skin disease is a disease that can be sufficiently prevented through vaccination, so we ask all farmers to complete the vaccination without exception. We also urge everyone to actively participate in insect control measures such as removing water puddles around livestock barns and using insecticides."
