On the morning of the 28th at 10 a.m., Ulsan City will hold the 10th West Sea Defense Day Commemoration Ceremony in the main auditorium of City Hall to honor the 55 heroes who sacrificed their lives while protecting the West Sea.
West Sea Defense Day has been held annually on the fourth Friday of March since 2016 to commemorate the 55 heroes who lost their lives in the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong (June 29, 2002), the sinking of the Cheonan (March 26, 2010), and the Yeonpyeong Island shelling (November 23, 2010), to raise public awareness of national security, and to reaffirm the commitment to defend the nation.
About 500 people will attend the ceremony, including Mayor Kim Dookyum, City Council Chairman Lee Seongryong, Army 53rd Infantry Division Commander Kang Kwanbeom, members of the National Assembly, heads and members of veterans and security organizations.
The ceremony will include the national pledge, floral tributes by male and female youth representatives, the reading of the names of the 55 heroes, commemorative and memorial speeches, and a memorial performance by the Army 53rd Infantry Division military band.
Kim Namil, Chairman of the Ulsan City Veterans Association, said, "I hope this ceremony will serve as an opportunity to remember the names of the 55 West Sea Defense heroes who sacrificed their lives in the face of North Korea's reckless provocations and to honor their noble spirit."
Mayor Kim Dookyum stated, "The soldiers of our armed forces who quietly carry out their duties on the frontlines of national security are the true heroes of our time," and added, "We will strive to remember the sacrifices of those who dedicated themselves to the nation and to carry on their spirit."
