Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, Attends Honorary Road Naming Ceremony for 'Choi Gyu-ha-gil' Connecting Past, Present, and Future
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, participated in the honorary road naming ceremony for ‘Choi Gyu-ha-gil’ held on the afternoon of March 27 in front of the late President Choi Gyu-ha’s residence (10 Donggyoro 15-gil).
Mapo District created ‘Choi Gyu-ha-gil’ around the residence to promote the historical value of the house (registered as a national cultural heritage in 2008), where the late former President Choi Gyu-ha lived for over 30 years from 1973, when he was appointed Prime Minister, until his passing in 2006 after serving as President.
To attract visitors, the pavement of ‘Choi Gyu-ha-gil’ is inscribed with ‘Choi Gyu-ha-gil’ in the ‘Choi Gyu-ha font,’ and an information board displaying ‘Choi Gyu-ha-gil’ in both Korean and English, as well as a house guideboard explaining the late President Choi Gyu-ha’s photos and achievements, were installed. Additionally, roses, dahlias, carnations, and evergreen shrubs, which President Choi Gyu-ha liked, were planted in front of the residence to create a space where anyone can sit and rest.
The naming ceremony was attended by Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District; Baek Nam-hwan, Chairperson of the Mapo District Council; Park Soon-jo, Chairman of the Choi Gyu-ha Presidential Memorial Association; and Choi Don-geun, Chairman of the Gangneung Choi Clan Wonju Branch, celebrating the birth of ‘Choi Gyu-ha-gil.’
On this day, Mayor Park Gang-su of Mapo District said in his commemorative speech, “Mapo is a living museum of modern history, with the residence of President Choi Gyu-ha, the Park Chung-hee Presidential Memorial Hall, and the Kim Dae-jung Presidential Residence and Library.” He added, “Preserving these historical heritages is essential to protecting our roots and allowing the future to blossom.”
He continued, “‘Choi Gyu-ha-gil’ is a short road of 90 meters, but the weight of history it carries is by no means light. Regardless of political ideology, I hope many visitors walk this path and take a time journey connecting the past, present, and future by following the footsteps of the late President Choi Gyu-ha, who was known for his integrity and steadfastness.”
