KOSPI Falls to 2600 Amid Concerns Over Trump-Induced Auto Tariffs

The KOSPI fell more than 1%, dropping to the 2600 level. The announcement of automobile tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump had an impact.

On the 27th, the KOSPI closed at 2607.15, down 36.79 points (1.39%) from the previous trading day.


That day, the index opened at 2620.28, down 23.66 points (0.89%) from the previous trading day, then recovered to the 2630s by offsetting some of the losses. However, it widened the decline again and ended the session down more than 1%.


By investor type, individuals and foreigners net bought 119.7 billion KRW and 88.6 billion KRW respectively. On the other hand, institutions net sold 315.1 billion KRW.


Most sectors declined. Transportation equipment & parts, machinery & equipment, and transportation & warehousing fell more than 2%. Pharmaceuticals, chemicals, electrical & electronics, and medical & precision instruments also dropped more than 1%. Meanwhile, textiles & apparel and construction rose slightly.


Among the top market capitalization stocks, Samsung Electronics traded at 61,800 KRW, up 400 KRW (0.65%) from the previous trading day. Hyundai Motor fell 4.28%, while SK Hynix, Kia, NAVER, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries dropped more than 3%. Celltrion, Hyundai Mobis, and POSCO Holdings also declined more than 2%.


On the KOSPI that day, 282 stocks rose, including Jayjun Cosmetic which hit the upper price limit. Without any stocks hitting the lower price limit, 611 stocks fell, and 48 stocks remained unchanged.


The KOSDAQ closed at 707.49, down 8.99 points (1.25%) from the previous trading day.


By investor type, individuals net bought 44 billion KRW. Meanwhile, foreigners and institutions net sold 21.3 billion KRW and 22.1 billion KRW respectively.


By sector, electrical & electronics and machinery & equipment fell more than 2%. Transportation equipment & parts, chemicals, and finance declined more than 1%. On the other hand, entertainment & culture rose 1.55%.


Among the top market capitalization stocks, Alteogen closed at 352,000 KRW, down 10,000 KRW (2.76%) from the previous trading day. Kolon TissueGene fell 5.42%, and HPSP dropped 4.01%. EcoPro BM, EcoPro, Classys, and Ligachem Bio also declined more than 2%. Meanwhile, HLB and SM rose 6.16% and 3.43%, respectively.


On the KOSDAQ that day, 459 stocks rose, including five stocks such as Nature & Environment which hit the upper price limit. Without any stocks hitting the lower price limit, 1,169 stocks fell, and 93 stocks remained unchanged.
