The documentary film "Sinking 10 Years, Zero Sum," which questions the still unrevealed truth of April 16, will be simultaneously released on Wednesday, April 2, at CGV, Lotte Cinema, and Megabox theaters nationwide.
The film contains "reasonable doubts" about the cause of the Sewol ferry sinking, based on testimonies from individuals who participated in the Sewol Ferry Hull Investigation Committee and the Special Investigation Committee on Social Disasters at the time, civilian divers who stayed at the scene, bereaved families, journalists who covered the investigation process, and the official reports investigated so far.
"Sinking 10 Years, Zero Sum" was produced through 10 years of research, collection, interviews, and editing, and was introduced to the world when it was invited and screened at the Jeonju International Film Festival last May. After struggling to find a distributor, a "Citizen Distribution Committee" was voluntarily formed from last November, and the film was made available to the public. Starting in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, community screenings have been held in more than 60 locations nationwide so far. Based on the steady interest and response from citizens, with a cumulative audience of about 6,000 people to date, the film will now be screened in theaters nationwide.
Although four official investigations have been conducted so far, the questions "Why did the Sewol ferry sink?" and "Why did the state not rescue the children?" remain unresolved mysteries. "Sinking 10 Years, Zero Sum" is a film that persuades and demands the government, the National Assembly, and citizens to start seeking the truth. As this year marks the 11th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster, many viewers who wish to remember and commemorate the tragedy are expected to attend.
Director Yoon Solji encountered the Sewol ferry disaster when the younger sister of one of her students passed away in the tragedy while she was working as a temporary English teacher at a high school in Ansan to make a living. After returning from the child's funeral, she promised herself to uncover the truth of the Sewol ferry and capture that truth in a film. After 10 years of preparation, she released the film "Sinking 10 Years, Zero Sum." She is currently working on producing a documentary film about the 1975 Inhyukdang Reconstruction Committee incident.
