Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province will create two strawberry smart farms by utilizing idle spaces within urban buildings.

Park Seung-won, mayor of Gwangmyeong City, said, "Gwangmyeong is experiencing a reduction in farmland due to large-scale urban development such as new towns, redevelopment, and reconstruction," adding, "To respond to changes in the future agricultural environment and promote sustainable smart agriculture policies, we decided to create indoor smart farms."

The smart farms will be operated in two types: 'public' and 'profit-oriented.' The public type will be installed in a 206㎡ area at the former Upcycle Center within the resource recovery facility in Gahak-dong 27th district. Inside, there will be a closed and vertical strawberry smart farm with a cultivation area of about 145㎡, along with experience and exhibition rooms, and an education center. Strawberries grown using LED lighting, automation systems, air conditioning, and temperature and humidity sensors will be used in programs operated within the smart farm's experience and education facilities.

The city plans to offer free experience programs for preschool children and elementary school students to tour the smart farm facilities and harvest crops themselves. For the general public, various paid experience programs such as making smart farm kits and strawberry desserts will be provided. Additionally, education on smart farm operation and crop cultivation for nurturing future agricultural talents will be prepared here.

The smart farm installed in the apartment-type factory at 201 Haan-dong will be operated as a 'profit-oriented' facility. This site will house a closed and vertical strawberry seedling smart farm with a cultivation area of about 192㎡ within a total area of 350㎡.

Seedlings grown here will be sold to farms, plant factories, and the general public. The city explained that strawberry seedlings produced in the closed smart farm have excellent quality as they can prevent problems such as seedling defects caused by pest and disease infections.
