Sang-il Lee, Mayor of Yongin: "In the Semiconductor Industry, Speed Is Subsidy"

Presiding Over the Advanced System Semiconductor Industrial Complex Support Task Force Meeting
"Cooperation Between Related Departments Must Be Strengthened for Smooth Development"

On the 26th, Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province held a meeting of the 'National Industrial Complex Development Support Task Force' chaired by Mayor Lee Sang-il to review the progress of the 'Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster National Industrial Complex.'

Sang-il Lee, Mayor of Yongin: "In the Semiconductor Industry, Speed Is Subsidy"

The task force is an organization established in 2023 with Mayor Lee as the head to ensure the smooth promotion of the system semiconductor complex being developed on a 7.78 million square meter scale in the Namsa and Idong-eup areas of Cheoin-gu.

Samsung Electronics will invest 360 trillion won to build six semiconductor production lines (fabs) in the system semiconductor complex. About 60 semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) companies are also expected to move in. Nearby, a 500,000 square meter exclusive industrial complex for relocating companies from the planned complex site will be developed.

At the meeting, the task force discussed this year’s major promotion plans of the city, including the creation of the corporate relocation complex, compensation promotion within the year, construction orders linked to compensation, and land supply, in cooperation with departments related to the national industrial complex promotion.

The meeting also shared infrastructure supply plans such as roads, electricity, and water by each ministry, which were discussed at the kickoff meeting of the 'Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Infrastructure Subcommittee' held jointly by related ministries on the 24th of last month.

Mayor Lee said, "In the semiconductor industry, speed is equivalent to subsidies," and urged, "Please frequently consult with related departments and share progress and related matters."

The system semiconductor complex is currently undergoing basic investigations for compensation by the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) following the approval of the complex plan in December last year. Once the investigation is complete, a compensation plan detailing the target properties and procedures will be announced in the first half of the year. Subsequently, after appraisal and confirmation of compensation amounts, negotiations with residents on compensation will begin in the second half of this year.

Transportation networks linked to the operation timing of Samsung Electronics’ fabs to be built in the complex will also be expanded. Currently, basic designs for the expansion of National Road No. 45 are underway, and designs for the expansion and establishment of four routes including Local Road No. 82 are being pursued. The city is also consulting with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and related agencies to include the extension of the Gyeonggang Line connecting Gyeonggi Gwangju Station to Idong and Namsa-eup, where the complex is located, as a 'new general railway project' in the 5th National Railway Network Construction Plan.
