Focusing on Creating a Safe Traffic Environment for Both Pedestrians and Drivers
Expanding Sidewalks, Installing Color Pedestrian Paths and Crosswalks After Comprehensive Survey of School Zones, Enhancing Public Transportation Facilities, and Improving Bicycle Infrastructure
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it is implementing a traffic safety plan to reduce traffic accidents by 10% compared to last year, creating a safe traffic environment for both pedestrians and drivers.
This year's traffic safety plan aims for a "people-centered safe traffic environment," focusing on reducing traffic accidents by 10% and creating a traffic environment centered on vulnerable road users.
According to the Korea Road Traffic Authority's traffic accident analysis, although the number of traffic accidents is on a downward trend, the proportion of traffic accidents involving children and the elderly remains high.
The district will invest a total budget of 2.58 billion KRW to promote 23 projects in four areas: ▲ protection of vulnerable road users ▲ improvement of road traffic ▲ advancement of traffic culture ▲ bicycle safety.
In particular, to ensure children can safely commute to and from school, a full survey of 66 school zones will be conducted to carry out site-specific facility improvement works. At six elementary schools including Yeongdong Elementary School, sidewalks will be expanded, and color pedestrian paths will be created in school zones where sidewalks and roadways are not separated.
In high-risk areas such as in front of the 63 Building, sidewalks will be extended and new crosswalks will be installed. At locations where traffic accidents frequently occur and jaywalking is common, traffic safety facilities such as blind spot alert devices, jaywalking prohibition facilities, and bollards will be installed.
To provide a convenient public transportation environment, additional bus stops, waiting benches, and bus information terminals will be expanded. Additionally, bicycle safety insurance and mobile bicycle repair shops will be operated to enhance the safety and satisfaction of bicycle users.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, "We will successfully complete the traffic safety projects by the end of the year to create a safe and convenient traffic environment for both pedestrians and drivers," and added, "We will continue to implement effective policies that prioritize the safety of residents."
