At the reporting session held that day, Mayor Kim Kyung-il of Paju, the Director of Urban Development, the Chief of Policy Secretariat, the Head of Urban Planning Division, and the Head of Peace Economy Division attended, and the Seoul National University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, the executing agency, reported the research results on the basic concept and specific implementation plans for the Paju Peace Economy Special Zone.
The Peace Economy Special Zone is a core task to achieve the "1 million self-sufficient city" along with the designation of an economic free zone. In 2023, the "Act on the Designation and Operation of Peace Economy Special Zones" was enacted and enforced, providing the legal basis to promote large-scale complex development projects such as industrial complexes, tourist sites, and urban development in border areas and other target regions.
Accordingly, Paju City plans to overcome various regulations imposed as a "metropolitan area and border area at the same time" through the creation of the Peace Economy Special Zone, fully utilizing industrial infrastructure facilities such as LGD established in Paju and competitive railway and road transportation networks to create a new advanced industrial ecosystem and a base for inter-Korean cooperation in Paju.
Mayor Kim Kyung-il of Paju said, "Through this study, Paju City plans to derive a phased development plan for inter-Korean cooperation and a plan to foster advanced strategic industries to establish the 'Paju Peace Economy Special Zone Vision.'" He added, "We will actively respond to the designation process of the Peace Economy Special Zone so that Paju's vision can be maximally reflected in the Ministry of Unification's basic plan for the Peace Economy Special Zone and Gyeonggi Province's development plan for the Peace Economy Special Zone, and achieve the attraction of the Peace Economy Special Zone to Paju."
