Daegu Dalseo District (District Mayor Lee Taehun) held a "Tree of Remembrance" planting event on the 24th near the Frog Boys memorial in Yongsan-dong, with children and local residents participating together.
This event was organized with the participation of children from child centers in the Daegu Dalseo area and Saemaeul members from Yongsan 2-dong. It aimed to remember the 1991 Frog Boys disappearance case and to raise community awareness for creating a safer environment where children can grow up safely.
On March 26, 1991, five elementary school students from Seongseo who lived in Dalseo District, Daegu, went out saying they were going to collect salamander eggs and went missing. In the early days of the case, the salamander eggs were mistakenly reported as frog eggs, leading to the boys being called the Frog Boys.
Participants observed a moment of silence in front of the memorial, and then planted white azaleas and forsythias nearby, reflecting on the precious value of life. In particular, the children attached name tags to the trees themselves, continuing the commemorative activity by connecting with nature and sharing the warm spirit of the community.
Lee Taehun, Mayor of Daegu Dalseo District, said, "This planting event is not just about remembering the past, but also a pledge to watch over our children more carefully so that such a tragedy is never repeated." He added, "We will continue to prioritize children's safety as our highest value and actively pursue policies that allow all children to grow up happy and healthy."
