On the 24th, Gwangju City held an emergency countermeasure meeting at the city hall disaster situation room, presided over by Mayor Kang Gi-jung, to focus all efforts on preventing large-scale spring wildfires.

The city convened the emergency meeting in response to worsening weather conditions due to recent climate change, with large wildfires occurring consecutively in various parts of North Gyeongsang, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang, and the national wildfire disaster crisis alert in the Gwangju area being raised to "Severe" on the 22nd.

The meeting was attended by officials from the five autonomous districts, the fire department, and the Mudeungsan National Park Office. They shared key strategies for preventing large-scale spring wildfires and reviewed the cooperative response system for initial wildfire suppression and prevention.

Mayor Kang emphasized, "As the dry weather continues in spring, we must do our utmost to prevent wildfires," and urged, "Please do your best to protect the lives and property of our citizens from wildfires."

Recently, the risk of wildfires has increased due to dry weather and strong winds. This coincides with the start of the farming season, raising the risk of wildfires caused by burning rice paddy banks, agricultural waste incineration, and accidental fires by hikers.

Since January 24, the city has operated the Wildfire Prevention Countermeasure Headquarters ahead of schedule and designated a special countermeasure period for large-scale wildfires for one month until April 15, focusing on prevention and response. In particular, professional wildfire prevention and suppression personnel have been intensively deployed in wildfire-prone areas to crack down on burning activities and to ensure rapid initial response in case of a fire.

The city is also using special grants secured from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to expand firefighting equipment, such as purchasing thermal imaging drones, and is conducting extensive wildfire prevention campaigns by broadcasting promotional videos via newspapers, TV, public transportation, and large electronic billboards.
