Emphasizing 'Digital Transformation' Within the Group
Pursuing Balanced Growth in AI Hardware and Software
"Will Lead Innovation Through Close Cooperation With Academia and Others"
Heo Tae-soo, chairman of GS, is taking the lead in AI innovation in the business community. Although he has been known as a 'reclusive executive' who avoided public appearances, he has been recognized as the right person to lead balanced growth in the industry due to his broad interest in the AI sector.
GS announced that Chairman Heo was inaugurated as the first chairman of the Korea Economic Association (KEA) 'AI Innovation Committee' on the 25th. KEA established the AI Innovation Committee to discover policies for AI technology innovation and its widespread adoption. As the inaugural chairman, Heo will represent the private sector and business community to promote the development of the domestic AI industry.
As a representative of the private sector, he will also actively communicate with the government’s National AI Committee. He plans to work with advisory members such as professors, experts, and lawyers affiliated with the committee to concretize policies.
Chairman Heo has emphasized the importance of innovation through AI within the group. Having served as CEO of GS Home Shopping, he led the transformation from a TV-centered business to mobile-focused operations. Since his inauguration as GS chairman in 2020, he has been promoting digital transformation at the group level. He is leading innovation by integrating AI into the operations of the group’s affiliates. Recently, he introduced 'Mir,' an in-house generative AI development program, applying it to business sites.
This is the first time Chairman Heo has served as the head of an association or committee outside the group. This appointment reflects the assessment that he is the right person to lead discussions for balanced development across the AI value chain. GS Group has invested broadly not only in AI hardware sectors such as semiconductors and data centers but also in promising startups and technologies in software and services. Chairman Heo believes that alongside the development of core areas like large language models (LLM) and semiconductors, efforts must also be made to develop services for AI commercialization. He expressed his commitment to creating an ecosystem where companies actively utilize AI.
Chairman Heo attended the inaugural meeting of the AI Innovation Committee held at the FKI Tower Conference Center in Yeouido, Seoul. The meeting was attended by Yeom Jae-ho, vice chairman of the Presidential National AI Committee, 16 operating committee members, and 5 advisory members. In his opening remarks, Heo said, "Major countries such as the United States and China are making extensive investments to gain leadership in artificial intelligence," adding, "Going forward, the AI Innovation Committee will work closely with industry, academia, and policy authorities to create an environment where companies can innovate more freely."
