Labor Dispute Mediation Requested in 10 Jeonnam Areas Including Hwasun
Collective Action Looms in Other Regions Such as Yeosu and Suncheon
Urban and rural bus workers in the Jeonnam region have called for wage increases and an extension of the retirement age. Depending on how the situation develops, they appear poised to take collective action.
According to the Jeonnam Regional Automobile Labor Union, which is part of the Korea Automobile Workers’ Federation, ten rural bus companies in Jeonnam filed for labor dispute mediation with the Jeonnam Regional Labor Relations Commission on the 19th.
By region, these companies are located in Hwasun, Goheung, Yeonggwang, Muan, Gurye, Jangseong, Yeongam, Hampyeong, Gangjin, and Gokseong. They are reportedly demanding a monthly wage increase of 230,000 won (7%) and an increase in the mandatory retirement age from 63 to 65.
The union stated that they have been negotiating with each company since January, but as no resolution has been reached, they filed for mediation to secure the right to take collective action, including strikes.
For similar reasons, five urban bus companies operating in Yeosu and Suncheon in Jeonnam are also expected to file for labor dispute mediation on the 25th.
