An aircraft heading from Los Angeles (LA), USA, to Shanghai, China, made an emergency return to San Francisco due to the captain forgetting his passport.


On the 24th, multiple Chinese media outlets, including Guangming Online, reported that United Airlines flight UA198, which took off from LA, made an emergency landing at San Francisco International Airport after 3 hours.

A passenger named Yu, who was on board, told Guangming Online in an interview, "The in-flight announcement said the captain had to return because he did not bring his passport," adding, "The flight schedule was delayed by 6 hours." The flight was originally scheduled to arrive in Shanghai at 6:30 PM on the 23rd but was delayed until 12:30 AM on the 24th.


According to reports, the airline provided passengers with $30 meal vouchers after landing in San Francisco. Passengers waited at the airport for about 3 hours. Afterwards, they boarded another flight to Shanghai piloted by a different captain.


Zhonghua Net estimated that the emergency landing caused a fuel loss of approximately 300,000 yuan (about 60.65 million KRW).
