Top scholars in the energy sector from Korea and Germany have issued a special recommendation emphasizing the need to establish a long-term funding cycle of 10 to 15 years.

The policy proposal was co-authored by 22 energy transition experts from both countries, including Namkyu Park, a world-renowned scholar in the field of solar cells and professor at Sungkyunkwan University, and Wolfgang Marquardt, a distinguished expert in process systems engineering and former chair of the Helmholtz Ulm Research Center.

The document reflects the outcomes of sector-specific workshops held online throughout 2024 and the 8th Korea-Germany Academy Joint Symposium held in Seoul in January 2025.

The policy proposal aims to enhance bilateral cooperation and achieve a sustainable and resilient energy future by addressing the current status, challenges, joint research priorities, and policy recommendations in five key areas: ▲solar power technology, ▲hydrogen technology, ▲next-generation batteries, ▲power grid management, and ▲future energy.

In particular, the comprehensive recommendations highlight the establishment of a long-term (10 to 15 years) funding cycle, the activation of exchanges among young researchers, and the strengthening of talent development and education in the energy transition sector, drawing attention to their potential incorporation into future policies.

President Jin-ho Jung stated, "The German Leopoldina is one of the strategic European regional partners of our academy, and we have engaged in academic exchanges on various topics since 2012. We hope that this jointly published proposal, released for the first time, will contribute to future R&D cooperation and the formulation of energy transition policies between the two countries."

The policy proposal will be distributed to relevant government ministries and related organizations, and the electronic file (PDF) can be downloaded from the academy’s website.
