Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold an online special lecture titled "Understanding and Managing Allergic Rhinitis" for caregivers of infants and young children in preparation for the changing seasons.
According to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, children aged 0 to 9 accounted for about 23% of all allergic rhinitis patients in 2023. Especially during the spring transitional season, large temperature differences and dry air weaken immunity and make the respiratory mucosa sensitive, increasing the likelihood of worsening respiratory diseases such as allergic rhinitis.
Additionally, children often have difficulty accurately expressing their symptoms, leading to missed opportunities for timely treatment. Delayed treatment can cause rhinitis to become chronic, increasing the risk of developing sinusitis, otitis media, and asthma. Persistent nasal congestion can also negatively affect growth and development by causing sleep disorders and decreased concentration, making early recognition and management crucial.
In response, the Nowon-gu Public Health Center, in collaboration with the Nowon-gu Childcare Support Center, has prepared this lecture to raise awareness about infant and young child health management and provide practical assistance.
The lecture will be conducted by Professor Min Taek-gi of the Department of Pediatrics at Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital, covering in-depth health information that caregivers must know, including ▲major causes and symptoms of allergic rhinitis ▲differences from the common cold ▲effective management and prevention guidelines. The lecture will last 60 minutes, followed by a Q&A session to address caregivers' questions.
The special lecture will be held online via real-time video conferencing (ZOOM) on April 17 at 10:30 AM, with registration limited to the first 100 applicants. Participation applications can be made through the Nowon-gu Childcare Support Center website.
The district is operating customized programs to prevent and manage allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis and asthma, which are on the rise. Currently, it is implementing effective projects with differentiated approaches, including ▲operation of atopic and asthma safe schools ▲customized preventive education (storytelling, puppet shows, etc.) ▲‘Atopy Free’ forest experience ▲medical expense and moisturizer support for allergic disease patients in vulnerable groups.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, stated, "Allergic rhinitis can affect the overall health of growing children, including sleep, concentration, and immunity," adding, "We will strive to support healthy growth of children by providing various prevention and management programs and emphasizing the importance of early treatment and consistent immune care."
