Railroad Disaster Safety Situation Room Activated Immediately After the Accident
Train Operations Suspended from Hongdaeipgu Station to Seoul National University Station
On the morning of the 23rd, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport immediately activated the 'Railroad Disaster Safety Situation Room' and began accident recovery and cause investigation in response to the train derailment accident that occurred at Sindorim Station on Seoul Subway Line 2.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that it deployed related organizations such as the Aviation and Railroad Accident Investigation Board, Railroad Safety Supervisors, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority to the site, centered on the Railroad Safety Policy Officer, focusing on accurately identifying the cause of the accident and minimizing damage. Seoul Metro also dispatched an initial response team to the site immediately after the accident to assess the situation and take emergency measures.
On the 23rd, a train being dispatched at Sindorim Station on Seoul Subway Line 2 in Guro-gu, Seoul, collided with a track barrier facility on the tracks and derailed. The accident occurred in an underground track section, making it difficult to bring in heavy equipment such as cranes, so it is expected that the recovery will take some time. Jeong Ui-gyeong, Railroad Safety Policy Officer of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "We will thoroughly investigate whether there were any violations of compliance by the train operation personnel, whether the accident response was appropriate, and whether there were any abnormalities in the safety management system." He added, "If any problems in safety management are found during the investigation, we plan to conduct a special inspection."
The Ministry also instructed Korail to respond thoroughly to ensure there are no disruptions in passenger guidance on transfer lines such as Line 1.
The accident occurred at around 7:50 a.m. at platform 4 of Sindorim Station. A train that had left the vehicle depot and was in operation collided with the buffer stop (a safety device installed at the end of the track to prevent the train from proceeding further) and derailed. There were no passengers on board the train, so no casualties occurred.
Due to this accident, train operations have been suspended on the outer loop section of Subway Line 2 from Hongdaeipgu Station to Seoul National University Station. The time for resuming operations has not yet been confirmed.
