Acceleration of LCD-to-OLED Transition
1.43 Million Out of 2 Million OLED Monitors Last Year
27-inch QHD Model to Launch in First Half of the Year
Strategy to Expand Ultra-High-End and Mid-to-Low Price Lineups
Samsung Display aims to popularize self-emissive monitors this year by expanding sales of quantum dot organic light-emitting diode (QD-OLED) panels for monitors.
On the 23rd, Samsung Display announced that it expects shipments of QD-OLED panels for monitors to increase by more than 50% compared to last year's 1.43 million units, and is increasing supply accordingly.
According to market research firm Omdia, global shipments of OLED panels for monitors reached approximately 2 million units last year, showing nearly 300% average annual growth over the past three years with ▲8,300 units in 2021 ▲160,000 units in 2022 ▲820,000 units in 2023. This indicates a rapid technological transition from liquid crystal displays (LCD) to OLED, a trend led by QD-OLED. Of the 2 million OLED monitors shipped last year, 1.43 million were QD-OLED, giving Samsung Display a market share of 71.2%.

In particular, Samsung Display launched a 27-inch ultra-high-definition (UHD, 3840x2160) monitor earlier this year. This product has a pixel density of over 160 PPI (pixels per inch), the highest among self-emissive gaming monitors. While resolution simply refers to the number of pixels that make up the display screen, pixel density indicates the actual compactness of pixels regardless of screen size, providing a more intuitive measure of image quality.
The 27-inch QHD (quad high definition, 2560x1440) model to be released in the first half of this year is also regarded as a 'game changer' in the premium monitor market. This product supports the highest 500Hz refresh rate among existing self-emissive monitors. When a high refresh rate monitor combines with the inherent fast response time (around 0.03ms) of self-emissive displays, users can enjoy smooth and natural visuals even during fast screen transitions and moments with rapid movement, such as gaming or watching sports.
Based on the strong demand confirmed in the market, Samsung Display plans to aggressively expand its product lineup for both general consumers and corporate clients. In the gaming lineup, it will enter the mid-to-low price market in addition to the existing high-end models, while preparing a variety of general consumer products that cover content viewing such as movies and work. In the corporate sector, Samsung Display is expanding its reach beyond broadcasting and film production to various industries including medical, design, engineering, and finance, and is currently discussing launch timings with key customers.
Jung Yong-wook, Senior Vice President and Head of Strategic Marketing Team at Samsung Display’s Large Display Business Division, said, "The technological transition from LCD to OLED in the monitor market will accelerate further, driven by the differentiated image quality and technological superiority proven by QD-OLED. We will introduce various innovations and products to meet the heightened expectations of customers and consumers first."
