The Waterworks and Sewerage Division of Gimcheon City conducted an environmental maintenance activity on March 21 in the Daegwangcheon area, a major tributary of Gamcheon.
About 50 participants, including staff from the Gimcheon Clean Water Office and the Environmental Business Office, which operates the sewage treatment plant, took part in the event. They removed trash and undergrowth, and promoted the significance of World Water Day to citizens.
World Water Day is a commemorative day designated as March 22 at the 47th United Nations General Assembly in 1992, reflecting the recommendations of the Rio Earth Summit in Brazil.
Since 1993, commemorative events have been held worldwide to raise awareness of the importance of water and emphasize the need for water resource conservation. In Korea, various events, including a government-level ceremony, have been held since 1995.
The head of the Waterworks and Sewerage Division of Gimcheon City stated, "I hope this event will serve as an opportunity to once again remind us of the importance of water in the era of climate crisis," and added, "We will continue to do our best to ensure safe water management and realize water welfare."
