As the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) continues to persist mainly in Yeongam County, Jeonnam, vaccination against FMD has now been completed for all 22 cities and counties under the jurisdiction of Jeonnam Province. The provincial government announced that it will focus all administrative efforts on preventing further FMD infections until immunity is fully established through vaccination.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 21st, FMD vaccinations have been completed for 1.68 million cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, pigs, goats, and deer) in the 22 cities and counties of the province.
By livestock type, this includes 268,000 cattle, 356,000 pigs, 50,000 goats, and 102 deer.
Vaccinations for 465,000 cloven-hoofed animals on 2,687 farms in Yeongam, the initial outbreak area, and Muan, an additional affected area, were completed on the 20th.
To prevent further spread of FMD, the province has increased the number of control checkpoints from 34 to 38. Additionally, five checkpoints each have been set up in areas within a 10km radius and in regions where FMD has not occurred. The number of main disinfection facilities remains at 23.
The province is maintaining the highest crisis response level, "Severe," in 10 cities and counties, including Yeongam, Muan, Naju, Hwasun, Jangheung, Gangjin, Haenam, Mokpo, Hampyeong, and Sinan.
Meanwhile, since the first confirmed case on the 13th, FMD has been detected at 13 Korean cattle farms in Jeonnam, including 12 in Yeongam and one in Muan.
