A man in his 50s who verbally abused and assaulted police officers dispatched after he dined and dashed at a restaurant was sentenced to a suspended prison term.
On the 22nd, Judge Lee Jun-seok of the Criminal Division 8 at the Seoul Eastern District Court announced that Mr. A, a man in his 50s who was tried on charges of obstructing official duties, was sentenced to 10 months in prison with a two-year suspension.
Mr. A was prosecuted for verbally abusing and repeatedly assaulting two police officers dispatched after he dined and dashed at a restaurant in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, last October.
The court stated, "The degree of assault the defendant inflicted on the victim police officers was considerable, and they wish for the defendant to be punished. The defendant caused a disturbance even after being arrested and detained in a holding cell for this incident, which makes his culpability very serious."
However, the court explained the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendant admitted to the crime and is showing remorse, deposited 1 million won each as a criminal bond for the victim police officers, has no prior criminal record exceeding fines, and suffers from a mental illness."
