6.8% Fee Imposed... Increased Burden on Small Business Owners and Consumers
"A Typical Sign of 'Eat-and-Run' Behavior by Foreign Capital"
Jinwook Jung, Member of the National Assembly.
On the 21st, Democratic Party lawmaker Jung Jinwook (Gwangju Dongnam-gap) urged, "Baemin (short for Baedal Minjok), which is driving small business owners to the edge, must immediately withdraw its greedy commission policy."
In a press release, Jung stated, "Baemin is once again trying to increase the burden on small business owners and consumers by imposing excessive commissions, despite social criticism," and added, "It is questionable whether Baemin truly has any intention of mutual growth, as it raised commissions again before the ink even dried on the mutual growth agreement signed with the government."
On the 12th, Baemin decided to impose a 6.8% intermediary commission even on takeout orders where customers visit the store to pick up their food. After raising the delivery intermediary commission from 6.8% to 9.8% last year, the company has effectively implemented an additional increase in less than a year.
Jung pointed out, "Baemin claims that this measure is to promote takeout orders, but in the end, it only results in a greater burden for self-employed business owners," and added, "The additional intermediary commission burden will lead to an increase in food prices, harming both consumers and small business owners."
He continued, "It is concerning that Baemin continues this behavior despite social criticism, as it may be a sign of the typical 'eat-and-run' behavior of foreign capital," and criticized, "Baemin's tyranny can no longer be overlooked. There is a need for public outrage and strong action."
Jung repeatedly urged, "Practical regulatory measures must be promptly established to keep Baemin's monopoly in check," and emphasized, "Baemin must immediately withdraw its greedy takeout commission policy that threatens the survival of small business owners."
