Previously, Professor Choi was also selected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2023. Globally, only 11 researchers have been simultaneously recognized as Fellows by both IEEE and SID in the display field. In Korea, the late Professor Lee Byung-ho (Seoul National University) was the first case. Professor Choi is the second case in the country.

The Fellow status is awarded only to researchers who are in the top 0.1% of members of the respective society with outstanding research achievements, and the fellowship is for life.

Professor Choi is regarded as a leading researcher in the display field, having started display research during his doctoral studies at Seoul National University and leading the field for over 30 years.

From the 1990s until 2014, he led research on high-efficiency plasma display panels (PDP), establishing himself as a world-renowned authority.

After the decline of the PDP industry, Professor Choi shifted his research focus to flexible displays and succeeded in developing world-class flexible encapsulation technology applicable to flexible OLED devices.

In particular, aiming to realize the "Truly Wearable Display," which is gaining attention as a future display technology, he pioneered innovative research to fabricate OLED devices on fabrics and threads.

He also conducted the world's first biomedical application research using wearable display technology for wound healing, jaundice treatment, and dementia treatment. Among these, the OLED patch technology for wound healing is currently at the commercialization stage.

Professor Choi’s appointment as an SID Fellow is a recognition of this series of achievements.

Meanwhile, Professor Choi has received numerous awards for his display research achievements, including the Merck Award (2018), SID Best Paper Award (2020), UDC Innovation Research Award (2022), Top 100 Excellent Research Outcomes in National Projects (2018, 2025), KAIST Academic Award (2014), KAIST Representative Research Achievement (2019), and Excellent Research Achievement (2024). He is currently also an active member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea.
