'Yoon, 60% Say Should Be Dismissed vs 35% Say Should Return'... Constitutional Court Trust Significantly Rises [Polpol News]

72% Support Conversion of Inheritance Tax to Estate Acquisition Tax

A survey found that 60% of the public believes that President Yoon Seok-yeol should be impeached and removed from office by the Constitutional Court. Trust in the Constitutional Court has significantly improved.


According to the National Barometer Survey (NBS) conducted from the 17th to the 19th by Embrain Public, K-STATS Research, Korea Research, and Hankook Research (phone interviews via mobile phones with 1,003 men and women aged 18 and older nationwide, with a sampling error of ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, and a response rate of 21.1%), the opinion that President Yoon’s impeachment should be upheld rose by 5 percentage points compared to the same survey last week. The opinion that the impeachment should be dismissed fell by 4 percentage points to 35%.

Positions varied according to party support. Among supporters of the Joguk Innovation Party and the Democratic Party, 100% and 97% respectively favored upholding the impeachment. Conversely, 90% of People Power Party supporters believed the impeachment should be dismissed. By political orientation, 88% of progressives and 72% of moderates supported upholding the impeachment, while 67% of conservatives believed it should be dismissed.


Regarding expectations for the outcome of the impeachment trial regardless of personal opinion, 57% anticipated that the impeachment would be upheld. This is a 4 percentage point increase compared to the previous survey. The expectation that the impeachment would be dismissed decreased by 4 percentage points to 34%.


Trust in the Constitutional Court noticeably increased in this survey. The proportion of respondents who trust the Constitutional Court was 60%, up 9 percentage points from last week’s survey. Those who do not trust it accounted for 36%, down 9 percentage points from the previous survey.

Regarding suitability for the next presidential candidate, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, ranked first with 33%. Kim Moon-soo, Minister of Employment and Labor, received 10%, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon 5%, Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo 5%, and People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon 4%.


Regarding party support, the Democratic Party’s approval rating rose 2 percentage points to 38%, while the People Power Party’s support fell 6 percentage points to 32%. The Joguk Innovation Party stood at 7%, and the Reform New Party at 1%.


Regarding the proposal to reform inheritance tax into an estate acquisition tax, 72% responded positively, while 23% responded negatively.
