Opposition Tension vs Ruling Party's Hopes for Dismissal and Rejection
Debate Continues Over Reasons for Delay
Yongsan Responds with 'Low-Key' Approach
The Constitutional Court's ruling on President Yoon Suk-yeol has been delayed longer than expected, plunging the Blue House and the political sphere into chaos. The People Power Party, which has adopted opposition to impeachment as its party stance, is raising hopes for dismissal or rejection. The opposition is tense due to the delay in the Constitutional Court's decision. As President Yoon remains silent ahead of the court's ruling, political debates continue, leaving the public confused.
A Blue House official stated on the 20th, "There will be no separate statement from the Blue House until the Constitutional Court's final decision is made," adding, "President Yoon intends to wait for the court's ruling as cautiously as possible." The Blue House is emphasizing a 'low-key' response, signaling a move to avoid actions that might provoke public division or irritate the court.
In front of the Constitutional Court, confrontational protests between ruling and opposition parties are intensifying. People Power Party lawmakers Na Kyung-won, Kim Min-jeon, Kang Min-kook, and Lee Man-hee are holding relay protests, while the Democratic Party's floor leaders, including Park Sung-joon and Kim Yong-min, held a press conference urging swift impeachment.
The opposition had expected the court to announce the ruling date the previous day, but with no notice given, anxiety is mounting. Especially since the 26th is the sentencing date for Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung's second trial on election law violations, the opposition is urging the court for a prompt decision.
Democratic Party lawmaker Jung Sung-ho commented on the delay, saying, "While the orders for impeachment and dismissal may align, each reason might have individual opinions from the justices, so it seems time is needed to thoroughly agree on even the smallest details and finalize the judgment." He added, "I think they could notify today and announce the ruling by tomorrow afternoon."
On the other hand, Professor Cha Jin-ah of Korea University Law School said, "The delay in the Constitutional Court's decision indicates that the current situation is not just about finalizing the decision text but that there are disagreements among the justices preventing consensus."
Professor Park Myung-ho of Dongguk University said, "Right now, waiting is what must be done," urging, "The political sphere should focus on minimizing division and conflict." Special-appointed Professor Choi Chang-ryeol of Yongin University pointed out, "The political sphere is disturbing public sentiment by making far-right remarks or talking about dismissal and rejection."
