KT, KEPCO, and Seoul National University
Join Forces for AI Innovation in the Power Industry
Developing Specialized AI Solutions and Security Systems Based on Hybrid Cloud
KT is partnering with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Seoul National University to develop and demonstrate artificial intelligence (AI) specialized for the power industry.
On the 20th, KT announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KEPCO and Seoul National University for the joint development and demonstration of 'power-specialized AI.' The main aspects of this collaboration include the development and demonstration of AI solutions and security systems specialized for the power industry based on a 'Hybrid Cloud,' discovery of new business models combining power and AI, joint research and development (R&D) of core technologies, nurturing talent in the power and AI sectors across academia, industry, and research institutes, and support for innovative companies.
Through cooperation with the two institutions, KT will promote a project to develop and demonstrate AI solutions and security systems specialized for the power industry based on a hybrid cloud. They plan to lead innovation in power systems by utilizing generative AI technology and inference functions. KT also aims to collaborate with innovative ventures and startups to develop AI-specialized energy solution business models and jointly enter overseas markets.
In particular, KT focuses on establishing an AI security system that complies with information security guidelines such as network separation in public institutions. KT’s hybrid cloud enhances security by controlling access at different levels according to data importance. When exchanging data between internal and external networks, encryption and real-time monitoring systems prevent information leakage, and precise access control is applied to data processed by AI models.
Additionally, KT will explore new business models combining power and AI by applying Korean-style AI developed in collaboration with Microsoft. The Korean language-specialized large language model (LLM) is expected to be key to developing customer-tailored AI models.
CEO Kim stated, “By combining the top-level capabilities of KT, KEPCO, and Seoul National University, we expect a true spread of AX (AI Transformation) in the public sector,” adding, “Based on active cooperation, KT will support the AX of the national power industry and establish itself as an accelerator leading the acceleration of AX in other domestic industries.”
