Italian Centrist Daily Publishes 4-Page AI-Generated Special Edition
Leading News Organizations Actively Adopt AI for News Production
Il Foglio, a centrist conservative Italian daily newspaper founded in 1996, announced on the 18th (local time) that it has published a special issue, 'Il Foglio AI,' created with the full involvement of artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time in the world.
Il Foglio AI was produced in a large format spanning a total of 4 pages. From that day, it has been sold alongside the regular print newspaper at newsstands and online.
The most notable feature is that every step of the newspaper production process was carried out by AI. AI handled all aspects including article writing, headlines, quotations, and summaries. Human journalists only played the role of inputting questions to the AI.
The special issue included 22 articles and 3 editorials. The front page featured an article criticizing the contradictory behavior of supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump within Italy. Additionally, a column titled "Putin's 10 Betrayals" covered cases where Russian President Vladimir Putin broke promises and agreements over the past 20 years.
The second page contained articles related to the Italian economy. The fourth page, designed as an opinion section, included reader letters generated by AI. One reader posed the question, "Will AI make humans useless in the future?" In response, the AI answered, "AI is a great innovation, but it still doesn't know how to order coffee without messing up the sugar."
As generative AI such as ChatGPT advances, major news organizations worldwide are actively utilizing AI in news production. The New York Times (NYT) in the United States uses an AI tool called 'Echo' for headline creation, interview question generation, and social media post writing. Since 2014, the Associated Press (AP) has been automatically generating corporate earnings news using 'Wordsmith.'
