Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport: "International Flights to Operate During Island Expo... Full Support"

Organizing Committee for the Island Expo Receives Positive Response to Key Proposals

Park Sangwoo, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, has pledged active support for the operation of irregular international flights at Yeosu Airport during the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo.


According to the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo Organizing Committee on the 19th, Kim Jonggi, Secretary-General of the Organizing Committee, met with Minister Park Sangwoo at the National Land Development Exhibition Hall in Seoul the previous day to propose cooperation measures for the successful hosting of the Island Expo.

The meeting was also attended by Lee Junghyun, Vice Chairman of the Local Era Committee, and Choi Jeonggi, Deputy Mayor of Yeosu City.


Key cooperation topics under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport included 'approval for irregular international flights at Yeosu Airport and increased domestic flights' and 'increased KTX and other train services to Yeosu' to enhance convenience for international visitors. In particular, the Organizing Committee actively requested the designation of 2026 as the 'Year of Visiting Islands,' which requires close cooperation among government ministries.


Minister Park Sangwoo stated, "I wish for the successful hosting of the Island Expo, the world's first expo themed on islands," and added, "We will do our utmost to support transportation convenience for visitors, including air travel and KTX."


Secretary-General Kim Jonggi said, "The interest and support of central government ministries such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport are essential for the successful hosting of the Island Expo," and continued, "We plan to continuously identify and propose agenda items that can draw cooperation from central ministries."


Meanwhile, the Organizing Committee has been continuing its proposals to secure cooperation from central government ministries for the success of the Island Expo, starting with a proposal to the Second Deputy Minister of the Office for Government Policy Coordination in February.
