The AI and IoT-based chronic disease management project being promoted in Nam-gu, Gwangju is showing remarkable effectiveness in the management of hypertension and diabetes.

According to Nam-gu on the 19th, the AI and IoT-based senior chronic disease management project is a specialized initiative by the district office that combines advanced technology and smart devices to manage chronic diseases among local residents.

The project provides residents with various services, including AI speakers, activity trackers, and information on healthy diets, aiming to improve both chronic disease management and overall health behaviors.

Nam-gu conducted pre- and post-project evaluations on participating residents last year and confirmed significant achievements in the control and medication adherence rates for hypertension and diabetes.

The hypertension control rate among participants increased from 49.8% to 63.4%, while the diabetes control rate rose from 78.4% to 85.6%. These rates indicate how well blood pressure and diabetes are being managed, with higher numbers reflecting better health management.

Additionally, the medication adherence rate, which measures how regularly participants take their medication, also improved as participants consistently took their medication for chronic disease management. The medication adherence rates for hypertension and diabetes increased by 30% and 17.6%, respectively.

With clear results from the project, Nam-gu plans to further strengthen the AI and IoT-based chronic disease management project for seniors this year.

In particular, the number of dedicated personnel for the project will be doubled to frequently monitor participants' health and provide immediate feedback to residents showing abnormal signs.

This year, 420 residents aged 65 and older will be newly recruited to participate in the project.

Participants will undergo basic health checkups and preliminary assessments of their chronic disease management status next month. Based on the results, they will receive the necessary smart devices and begin managing their hypertension and diabetes.

The smart devices provided include five types: AI speakers, Bluetooth activity trackers, scales, automatic blood pressure monitors, and blood glucose meters. Only devices essential for each participant’s health management will be provided.

A Nam-gu official stated, "Last year, participant satisfaction with this project reached as high as 94.2%," adding, "As the project has proven effective in improving chronic diseases, we will do our best to ensure that local seniors can enjoy healthier lives."
