Imsil-gun to Launch 'Cancer Prevention Day Campaign' on the 21st

Recommendations for National Early Cancer Screening

The Imsil County Public Health Center in North Jeolla Province announced on the 19th that it will conduct a 'Cancer Prevention Day Campaign' for local residents at Imsil Market on the 21st.

This campaign is being held in recognition of the 18th Cancer Prevention Day to raise awareness about the importance of cancer prevention and early screening, as cancer is the leading cause of death.

March 21 is designated as Cancer Prevention Day, a day established to promote the importance of cancer prevention practices announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the significance of early detection.

The campaign highlights that one-third of cancer cases can be prevented, another third can be managed through early diagnosis and treatment, and the remaining third can be alleviated with appropriate care.

Prevention is the most important aspect in the fight against cancer. In South Korea, six major cancers (stomach, colorectal, liver, cervical, breast, and lung cancer) are designated as national cancers, and early screenings are recommended according to the screening schedule.

This year, those eligible for the national cancer screening program are individuals born in odd-numbered years. Stomach and breast cancer screenings (for women) are recommended for those aged 40 and above, cervical cancer screenings (for women) for those aged 20 and above, lung cancer screenings for high-risk groups aged 54 to 74, and liver cancer screenings for high-risk groups aged 40 and above. In particular, colorectal cancer screenings should be conducted annually for those aged 50 and above.

Kim Daegon, Director of the Public Health Center, said, "In honor of Cancer Prevention Day, I hope this will be a great opportunity to raise awareness among local residents about the importance of cancer prevention, and to inform them about national early cancer screening programs and practical ways to adopt cancer-preventive lifestyles."
