The Yeonghae 3.18 Independence Movement was the largest independence movement in the North Gyeongsang region, where on March 18, 1919 (lunar calendar February 17), starting from the market day in Yeonghae-myeon, people from Chuksan, Changsu, and Byeonggok joined together to shout for the independence of their homeland.
This event, organized by the Yeonghae 3.18 Independence Movement Memorial Association (President Han Gyusang), proceeded in the order of a departure ceremony, a large-scale independence march, and a memorial service. It was especially meaningful as it brought together all generations, including local kindergarteners, middle and high school students, and senior citizens, to honor the spirit of the independence movement.
At the event, County Governor Kim Kwangyeol stated, "The Yeonghae 3.18 Independence Movement is a precious historical and cultural asset that transcends time and generations, and a proud symbol of patriotism and national defense spirit." He added, "We will spare no effort and support to widely promote and carry on the noble spirit of the independence movement."
