This education program is promoted to instill awareness of climate change among the elderly so that they can practice carbon neutrality in their daily lives.
To enhance effectiveness, customized education will be provided in five sessions per welfare center, with 15 to 20 participants per session.
The themes for each session are △ biodiversity △ resource circulation △ zero waste (generating no waste) △ carbon neutrality △ food.
The biodiversity (1st session) education covers topics such as the diversity of plants around us, and learning about Seongnam City’s flagship species including the Korean chub (Beoldeulchi), Papari firefly, and blue woodpecker. Activities include dyeing handkerchiefs with leaves and petals and making pressed flower wooden frames.
During the resource circulation (2nd session) education, participants learn about waste separation and disposal, Seongnam City Resource Circulation Center RE100, changes in Seongnam City’s cleaning administration, and the plogging campaign (picking up trash while walking). They also make cup coasters using sock yarn.
The zero waste (3rd session) education includes learning about ethical consumption and green consumption, living without generating waste, making shampoo bars, and hands-on practice making natural scrubbers from luffa fruit.
In the carbon neutrality (4th session) education, topics such as climate change and trees, and trees as carbon storage are covered. Participants can also try making wooden trays.
During the food (5th session) education, participants learn about practicing carbon neutrality through a vegetarian diet and ways to reduce food waste, and plant leafy vegetables (lettuce, kale, etc.) in pots.
Upon completing all sessions, participants can receive a total of 10,000 KRW in online Seongnam Love Gift Certificates as a reward, 2,000 KRW per session, through the ‘Climate Action Opportunity Income Environmental Education QR Code (QR)’.
A Seongnam City official said, “We expect this to raise interest in Seongnam City’s ongoing carbon neutrality and resource circulation policies and help achieve carbon neutrality,” adding, “We will continue to develop sustainable resident-participatory environmental education models.”
