"Hypocrisy," "Waste of 26.2 billion KRW in Taxes" Criticized
As it has been reported that President Donald Trump has visited his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida almost every week, dissatisfaction is rising among U.S. federal employees who have been ordered by the Trump administration to 'ban telecommuting.'
According to a report by NBC News on the 15th (local time), President Trump stayed at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, from February 14 to 19. During this period, he signed two executive orders and memorandums, yet he himself was 'working from home.' He also played golf four times.
NBC reported that since returning to the White House, President Trump has played golf 14 times. After the start of his second term, President Trump spent five out of seven weekends at Mar-a-Lago and spent the sixth weekend night at another residence in Miami.
President Trump returned to Mar-a-Lago on the 14th and is expected to stay until the evening of the 16th. On the afternoon of the 14th, the vehicle carrying President Trump was heading to a golf club.
The U.S. internet media outlet HuffPost analyzed that since January, the cost of President Trump playing golf on weekends has exceeded 18 million dollars (approximately 26.2 billion KRW) of American taxpayers' money. President Trump banned telecommuting while claiming that officials do not work properly at home and instead go out to play tennis or golf.
On the 11th, he said, "I think telecommuting is impossible," adding, "They will go out or play tennis or golf. They will not work."
A federal employee from the Department of Education said, "Every American should know this is not about 'rules,' but about 'who makes the rules,'" and added, "All of this perfectly fits the power dynamics established by this administration."
On the other hand, Tom Fitton, chairman of the conservative non-governmental organization Judicial Watch, pointed out that past presidents also frequently visited their residences and spent taxpayers' money on vacations during their terms. He defended President Trump by saying, "It's not a big deal."
