An accident occurred in downtown Gwangju where a sports utility vehicle (SUV) consecutively struck a pedestrian and a cargo truck.
At around 11:09 a.m. on the 15th, on a road in Daein-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju, an SUV hit a man in his 20s, identified as A, and then collided with a 1-ton truck that was driving in the opposite direction.
Even after the accident, the SUV failed to reduce its speed and crashed into a commercial building across the street. The truck, pushed by the impact, hit a roadside tree.
As a result of the accident, a total of four people were injured and transported to the hospital: the SUV driver, identified as B (76), pedestrian A, and two passengers in the truck. All are reported to be in stable condition with no life-threatening injuries.
No additional casualties occurred as there were no people inside the commercial building into which the SUV crashed. The SUV driver was found not to be unlicensed or under the influence of alcohol.
During the police investigation, B stated that "the vehicle did not function properly, such as failing to slow down."
The police plan to charge B with causing injury under the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling and are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
